Event Details

Date: July 11, 2026

Start time: 15:00

End time: 17:00

Venue: Meet at Glasgow Cathedral, next to the David Livingstone statue

While almost all traces of Glasgow’s medieval architecture have been swept away, it is still possible to discern the ancient High Street.

The layout of this would have been influenced by the “Davidian Revolution” introduced by David I of Scotland (1124-1153). It linked the two ancient hearts of Glasgow with a fish bone pattern of long narrow plots of land.

The first heart formed around Glasgow Cathedral. The second heart formed at Glasgow Cross and the Trongate. This was the mercantile heart of the city, where the market would have been held. Though this remains one of Glasgow’s key urban spaces, nothing survives of its medieval form.

It took half a millennium for the High Street to connect these two hearts. It took considerably less time for the Victorians and then the Post WW2 Modernists to unwind it.

Join Niall Murphy, the Director of Glasgow City Heritage Trust for a walk between Glasgow Cathedral and Glasgow Cross exploring this ancient street and what happened to it.

Walking route:
Urban streets, mostly flat route with gentle decline down High Street. Some steps may be involved. Easy walking pace.

Please note we are running 2 Medieval Glasgow walking tours: one on Thursday 11 June and one on Saturday 11 July. Please ensure you are booking the correct event!
