Ever wondered what lies behind the doors of 185 Bath Street?
Glasgow Art Club has been a creative hub for the city’s artists, thinkers and makers for generations, but now you can step inside and see what makes it so special.
In 1893 two adjacent town houses on Bath Street were transformed by architects Honeyman & Keppie, employing Charles Rennie Mackintosh, into the magnificent Clubhouse which stands today. This Grade A-listed gem is packed with original features, many designed by Mackintosh himself when he was just 25.
Thanks to a major restoration supported by The Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Scotland and generous private donors, the Club’s grand Gallery has been lovingly returned to its full Victorian glory. Don’t miss the showstopper: the Mackintosh Frieze. First painted in 1893 as his debut public artwork, it was hidden for decades under layers of plaster after water damage but it’s now beautifully restored for all to enjoy.
The Club also boasts an impressive collection of fine art paintings, sculpture and prints, much of which has never been on show to the public before.
The tour will last for around 1 hour with some refreshments in the Mackintosh Gallery beforehand.
