Monday 1st October – Monday 22nd October (4 consecutive weeks) | 6.30-8.30pm* |
Glasgow Ceramic Studio, 77 Hanson Street, Glasgow
Do you love tiles but have never had the opportunity to make them yourself?
Glasgow City Heritage Trust have teamed up with Glasgow Ceramics Studio and artist Alison Gray to bring you a 4 week practical evening class. Join us in October 2018 and experiment with shape, colour and surface treatment to create your very own set of handmade tiles.
Week 1: Monday 1st October – 6.30pm – 8.30pm
Introduction and Learning
In this first session we will get to know Glasgow Ceramic Studio and start to get familiar with handling clay. We will take a look examples of how tiles have been used throughout history, with particular reference to Glasgow’s rich tile heritage. Then it’s time to experiment with a variety of different making techniques for cutting, creating images, surfaces and textures, to create your master tile ready for replication.
Week 2: Monday 8th October – 6.30pm – 9.30pm *please note this is a 3hr session
Plaster Mould Making
This session will focus on creating a plaster mould of your chosen tile design so that in week 3 we can produce multiple replicas ready for glazing and firing. Alison and her colleagues will guide you through the process of setting up the formwork, mixing the plaster, and casting your very own tile mould.
Week 3: Monday 15th October – 6.30pm – 8.30pm
Tile Reproduction
With plaster moulds prepared it is now time to set the production line in motion to create your set of identical tiles. These will then be bisque fired ready for adding a splash of colour in week 4.
Week 4: Monday 22nd October – 6.30pm – 8.30pm
Decoration & Finishing
After a run through of some basic glazing techniques, now is the time to bring your tiles to life with a splash of colour. These will then be fired again ready for collection at a later date.
The cost of the 4 evening sessions is £95 per person. Price includes clay, glaze, plaster and two kiln firings.
Space is limited to 10 places, please book in advance.
We encourage you to bring along your own designs, and materials for inspiration, or alternatively just have fun and experiment on the night!
