Wednesday 19th August 2020 | 6pm BST | via Zoom
The city’s north has been revitalised in recent years to become an urban playground, a haven of wildlife, green space and a creative hub with strong community spirit and an important industrial heritage. We’ll continue to our tour of the city in lockdown with Paul Sweeney and Lisa Snedden, who’ll help us explore this often overlooked area of Glasgow.
Springburn Winter Gardens Trust Trustee, Paul Sweeney will tell us the story of Springburn, covering its heritage and history – from the Reid Family and locomotives to the future plans for the Category A-Listed Winter Gardens.
Paul served as the MP for Glasgow North East from 2017 until 2019. He is a member of Glasgow Building Preservation Trust and has led walks as part of Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival for several years. Paul was also involved in the restoration of the historic former Govan shipyard head offices into the Fairfield Heritage Centre, for which he won an award. After campaigning against the demolition of Springburn Public Halls in 2012, he founded the Springburn Winter Gardens Trust, which is working to restore the nearby Springburn Winter Gardens.
Lisa Snedden, Cultural Heritage Canal Officer at Keep Scotland Beautiful, will take us on a tour of the Forth & Clyde Canal – uncovering, exploring and celebrating the social and industrial history of Glasgow’s canal.
Lisa works with a range of groups from primary schools to historical societies helping them engage with the heritage of Scotland’s Canals. Having started her career as a primary school teacher, she has since worked in learning and interpretation roles in organisations such as the Tay Landscape Partnership and the Scottish Waterways Trust.
Free, booking required, donations welcome.
