The Friends of Garnethill Greenspace are building a new bread oven in Garnethill Park and we need your help!
The bread oven construction made great progress this summer, but the fire at the School of Art has meant the project had to take a break. It’s now time to finish the final phase of construction!
We are looking for volunteers between the 25th and 28th September to help with the construction of the oven. This is a fantastic opportunity to help build an amazing new resource for the local community and learn some practical skills at the same time.
Anyone over the age of 16 is welcome to come and help construct the bread oven, no need for any experience. If any of you out there do happen to be seasoned joiners or brick layers, your construction skills will be very welcome and put to good use!
If you enjoy learning by doing and getting your hands dirty, then this is training for you! We will be finishing the timber frame roof structure and cladding it with cedar shingles to protect our oven from the Scottish weather. The program may move faster or slower than expected depending on the number of volunteers and skills available.
This training is FREE to attend, however due to the constraints of the site, places will be limited.
All attendees will need to book in advance and be aged 16yrs +
Please see the ‘BOOKING‘ tab above for further details and available dates.
Once complete the bread oven will be fired regularly by FROGGS and other local community groups. Through the regular action of baking bread, the oven will be a space that is shared and cared for and the local community’s sense of ownership and connection with Garnethill Park will be strengthened by the oven’s presence and use. Nothing beats the smell of freshly baked bread coming across Garnethill Park!
Each training day will start onsite at 9.30am with a run through of the days tasks and demonstrations.
We will then work in small groups to construct the oven, taking regular breaks throughout the day. Please bring your own lunch or there is a Tesco nearby where you can buy food and drinks.
We will look to finish onsite at 4.30pm each day. It is our hope that you will attend for the full session.
PPE will be provided, however we encourage you to wear clothes that you are prepared to get dirty.
Please note that this is an outdoors activity, we encourage you to dress appropriately for the Scottish weather!
If you have any questions relating to the project then please contact our Heritage Outreach Manager, Gemma Wild on gemma@glasgowheritage.org.uk or 0141 552 1331.
