Building Repair Grants

The purpose of Glasgow City Heritage Trust’s Building Repair Grant programme is to help preserve and enhance the unique character of the built environment within Glasgow’s twenty-two conservation areas.

We offer grants to fund up to 40% of the cost of external building repairs to historic properties, to a maximum of £100,000.

Assessment Matrix for Grant Applications

All grant applications to the Trust are assessed in accordance with a variety of criteria relating to the Trust's priorities and targets. Details of these criteria can be found in our assessment matrix, downloadable by clicking the link below.  At present, projects scoring 9 points or above will be taken to the next stage. Applicants whose projects score 8 points or below will, regrettably, not be taken any further and therefore should not apply.

Please note that this matrix is subject to change throughout the financial period 2010-11.

Eligible works

In principle, grants can be offered for external repair and reinstatement works to any historic property within Glasgow’s 22 conservation areas or any A or B-listed property within Glasgow’s boundaries. Repairs to A and B-listed properties located outwith a conservation area must be comprehensive (ie at least three elements from the list below).

Eligible items include:

Structural Repairs - Minor structural repairs are eligible as part of a wider stone repair scheme.
Stone Repairs - The replacement of decayed or damaged stone to buildings and boundary walls, undertaken with indents of new natural sandstone to match existing. Extensive stone repairs will require petrographical analysis to determine the most appropriate replacement stone. Proprietary patching compounds or surface coatings are not grant-eligible. The painting of stonework or stone-cleaning of any sort are also not eligible for grant-assistance.
Repointing - Raking out defective mortar and repointing with appropriate lime mortar mix to match.
Paving - The repair or reinstatement of traditional sandstone slabs and granite or whin setts as appropriate.
Harling - renewal of traditional lime harling to match existing; advice from the Scottish Lime Centre Trust should be sought before applying to GCHT.
Roof coverings - Repair and replacement of traditional slate, lead and pantile roofs, including repairs to timber sarking. New slaterwork must match original (using salvaged Scottish, English or Welsh slate as appropriate, in random sizes and laid in diminishing courses; Spanish, Chinese or other "imported" slate is not grant-eligible). Breather membrane and copper nails must be used. Repair or reinstatement of traditional timber cupolas and cast iron rooflights is grant-eligible; renewal of modern patent-glazing cupolas or "Velux" style rooflights is not eligible. NB: Minor overhaul of a slate roof is not grant-eligible.
Flashings - Renewal of flat roofs and lead flashings to chimneys, skews, ridges, gutters etc. Sloping areas should be at least Code 6 lead sheet; flat areas should be at least Code 8.
Rainwater goods - The repair or reinstatement of lead or cast iron hoppers, cast iron gutters and downpipes. Cast aluminium and PVC goods items are not grant-eligible.
Windows - The repair, overhauling and reinstatement of traditional timber sliding sash-and-case windows, including stained and etched glass (double glazing is not grant-eligible).
Doors - The repair, refurbishment or reinstatement of solid timber or part-glazed external doors, including storm doors, fanlights and sidelights. Replacement doors (and, if appropriate, decorative glazed panels) must be based on documentary evidence or local examples.
Ironwork - Repair, refurbishment or reinstatement of structural or decorative cast or wrought iron including railings, balconies, lamp standards, lanterns, finials, crestings etc. The reinstatement of lost ironwork must be based on documentary evidence to determine the original ironwork pattern.

Grant-eligible costs include scaffolding and other preliminary costs on larger projects, appropriate professional fees and VAT at current rate.

Please note that to avoid double-funding, schemes which have already secured Historic Scotland/Glasgow City Council grants for external repairs can’t be consider for the Trust’s Building Repair Grants. However, educational or interpretation projects might still be eligible under our Heritage Partnership Grants programme.

Heritage Partnership Grants

In addition to our Building Repair Grants, the Trust also run a programme of Heritage Partnership Grants where funding is available for education, outreach and training projects related to the historic built environment.
