Art Nouveau & Natural Forms

A Heritage Project for Schools in Glasgow

Every year, Glasgow City Heritage Trust holds workshops for pupils from schools across the city to explore Glasgow’s built heritage. In 2011, our topic was ‘Art Nouveau & Natural Forms’, and the workshops involved trips to some of our most iconic Art Nouveau buildings.  The exhibition contains are some of the images produced during the workshops.

At the turn of the twentieth century, artists, architects and designers in Glasgow participated in a new artistic style sweeping Europe, Art Nouveau. In Glasgow, our interpretation of the style is often referred to asGlasgow Style, and is strongly connected with the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.  Alongside Mackintosh’s work, there are lots of other examples of Art Nouveau heritage in Glasgow, including buildings rich in Glasgow Styleornamentation within their ironwork, stained glass, stone details and sculpture, and they all play an important part in giving Glasgow its unique character.
